Coachella Valley Preserve Hiking Tour from Palm Desert California Description

The Coachella Valley Preserve system was designed to protect the threatened fringe-toed lizard. The fringe-toed lizard is found nowhere else in the world and is a highly-specialized animal suited to live on the Preserve's sand dunes. The sand moves constantly, which doesn't allow many animal species to settle, burrow or locate food. The fringe-toed lizard has elongated scales on the toes of their back feet that allow them to gain extra traction in the sand and quickly escape predators. The lizards also have elongated scales on their ears that keep sand away from their eardrums and allow them to dive headfirst into the soft sand and skim underneath the surface for a short distance. This allows the lizard to disappear without any noticeable trace, keeping them safe from nearly all predators.
